Description:
Multicolored image of a front facing woman wearing a hat and holding a bird.
Edition #72/75

A twenty-two color serigraph, relief block, and paper and fabric collage elements. The theme of a female figure, such as the one pictured here, is one of David C. Driskell's favorites, which he repeated in many of his works. The woman is depicted in a dress with printed flowers and is holding a bouquet, which is a reference to his mother, Mary Lou Cloud Driskell, who loved flowers. His mother often made quilts for the family's use, and the patchwork-like collage in the background also recalls her quilt making, which David C. Driskell learned from her as a young boy and used in his artistic practice. In fact, portions of the background collage are taken from Driskell's old woodcuts. The image celebrates African American female beauty and power, and the image of a house in the background celebrates her domesticity. The figure's right hand is exaggerated, an approach utilized by other African American artists, such as Charles White, to highlight the woman's power.

"Woman in Interior" is hanging in the University House Living Room.
