Title:
Pine Trees #5
Date:
1959
Description:
This work is one of a series of pine tree paintings Driskell created throughout his career. Though abstracted, Driskell's use of various shades of striking green against a patchwork of blue is recognizable as a tree. This iconic work features blocks of green interspersed with bits of vertical brown lines that convey a sense of movement, as if the tree is swaying in the wind. This image may have been inspired by his first visit to Maine in the early 1950s. Trees, gardens, and landscapes were often the subject of Driskell's work, and his love of nature is well documented. This work, depicting a pine tree, and others like it were specifically selected for the Pines family.

"Pine Trees #5" is hanging in the University House Living Room, near the grand piano.
