David C. Driskell at the University House
Artist:
Felrath Hines
Title:
Midnight Garden
Date:
1991
Description:
Felrath Hines' abstract painting depicts a white geometric figure against a black background, surrounded by blue, green, and yellow lines. Though the painting is two dimensional, the placement and shades of grey on the central figure give the impression of three dimensions. The focus on geometric color blocks in this 1993 work evokes his earlier work of the De Stijl and Cubist movements.

"Midnight Garden" is hanging in the University House Private Vestibule.

Felrath Hines was born in 1913 in Indianapolis, Ind., and began studying art in his youth. He trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Il. and the Pratt Institute, New York, N.Y. In the 1960s, he joined the Spiral Group alongside Romare Bearden and Richard Mayhew. Through this group and as a reaction to the civil rights movement, Hines endeavored to create art that could be seen and interpreted by all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender. Before his passing in 1993, he was a conservator at several institutions, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
