David C. Driskell at the University House
Artist:
David C. Driskell
Title:
White Still Life
Date:
1965
Description:
A still life on a table of flowers, dishes, and fruit; predominantly white.

In contrast to "Pine Trees #5" by David C. Driskell, "White Still Life", also painted by Driskell, is dominated by muted colors. The still life, depicting vases of flowers and an array of fruit on a table, is rendered in reds, blues, yellows, and greens, all of which are overlain with white. This color choice, in addition to the broad painterly brushstrokes, is a stark contrast to traditional European still life paintings, which tend towards hyperrealism and color saturation. This painting dates to 1965, the year Driskell held a fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Art History in The Hague. Dutch art, particularly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, is known for still life depictions. Considering still life is a theme in Driskell's body of work, "White Still Life" may be understood as Driskell's interaction with Dutch art with his unique voice.

"White Still Life" is hanging in the University House Corridor Bay #1, on one side of a set of double doors. "Sunshine, Frozen" is placed on the other side of the doors, creating a nice visual balance.
